It's that magical time of year where ladies all over Seattle and beyond are scanning magazines and blogs in search for the dress to wear to the grandest celebration of their lives -- their wedding day! So many decisions have to be made. From flowers, to favors, to venue -- planning a wedding is no easy task.

And, we think one couple in particular had one of the most charming weddings we've ever seen, er... read about. Ty and Lauren Debevoise creatively turned Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream Parlor (Ohio) into Jeni's Splendid Wedding Parlor. That's right, a wedding in an ice cream scoop shop! How cute is that? Talk about brilliant. Venue? Check. Dessert? Check. Happy guests? Check. Happy couple? Double check!

And, we know of a few Seattle scoop shops that would be the perfect locations for a celebration of wedded bliss. *Wink* Imagine our frilly and feminine Queen Anne shop all dressed up for a wedding! Maple Bacon is Here!

Kiwi's Are Here!

It's that time of year again! Yes, of course, the holidays are here, but did you know that in the late fall, and early winter, the Pacific Northwest's climate is perfect for growing kiwis? We were just as surprised as you to learn this interesting fact a few years ago, but we're now happy to bring you a special homemade batch of Kiwi Sorbet each winter!

These are not just any kiwis, mind you, but local kiwis from Pacific Crest Farm on Vashon Island. Pacific Crest Farm is part of the Pacific Crest School community in Ballard. Throughout the student's years of learning, they visit the farm frequently and participate in harvesting, planting, running the roadside stand, and producing food from the bounty of the farm.

Whether it's blackberries or cherries in the summer, or kiwis in the winter, we love using whatever goods Jen and her helpers at Pacific Crest can grow us. This is our third year making sorbet from their kiwi harvest and I think it is the best yet. The unusually dry and mild fall really treated Pacific Crest's one giant kiwi bush well, making for a cornucopia of plump and juicy kiwis—288 pounds to be exact—simply perfect for enough sorbet for all of our shops!

This is truly a once-a-year treat and we are so happy to have the opportunity to share it with our customers, all the while supporting a great farm, and school, and ensuring more special, super-seasonal harvests to come. We only could make a few batches of this delicious sorbet, so hurry in and get a scoop before it's all gone. Otherwise, you will have to wait a whole entire year for that big kiwi bush to do it all over again.

My Oh My, Ice Cream Pie!

Tired of the same ole holiday desserts? Wow your family and friends with a homemade Molly Moon's ice cream pie! Below is the recipe for one of our favorites, the Peppermint Hot Cocoa pie:

Ingredients:

2 pints Molly Moon's Peppermint Hot Cocoa ice cream (softened)

1 chocolate piecrust

hot fudge

candy cane dust

Directions:

Spoon the two pints of softened Peppermint Hot Cocoa ice cream in to the chocolate piecrust. Freeze the pie until firm. Slather the top of the frozen pie with hot fudge and sprinkle with candy cane dust! Devour and enjoy!

I guess you could say we're doing a little trick-or-treating too, except here at Molly Moon's instead of candy, we're in search of donors to help us support the Anna Banana Milk Fund at FamilyWorks in Wallingford! We've certainly received some amazing treats since our launch a couple of weeks ago. In fact, starting tomorrow, 62 families will receive their monthly milk supply for the first time! Such exciting news, and we're well on our way to 350 donors!

The Anna Banana Milk Fund, A Dedication to the Memory of My Little Sister

Dear Friends of Molly Moon's,

This is probably the most important letter I will ever send out to the Molly Moon's community. I'm writing today to tell you about a fund I've helped create at FamilyWorks food bank in memory of my little sister, Anna.

Like many siblings', Anna and my relationship was a complex blend of best friends and nurturing. But we also shared something a bit strange: a LOVE of milk! It is with great pride that I've set up a fund to honor her. With donations of $10 per month, the Anna Banana Milk Fund and FamilyWorks will provide all the milk individuals and families will need.

Long before I opened the Wallingford shop, with much help from Anna, our childhoods were full of milk. We never could have imagined growing up without limitless amounts of milk being available to us. We always had a glass of milk with dinner, slurped our cereal milk at breakfast, and if we didn't have ice cream, drank milk with cookies for dessert. Our family members would even prepare for visits from us by buying more milk to have in the house! Well into adulthood, when Anna moved in with me shortly before the Wallingford shop opened, our mom would slip me extra money to support our milk-drinking habits. After a devastating motorcycle accident, Anna passed away in the fall of 2009 from injuries sustained in the crash, though she did not suffer a single broken bone.

And so, it's in Anna's honor and sweet, giving spirit that I've set up a fund to honor her. And I am now asking the Molly Moon's Ice Cream community to help me fund it. With donations of $10 per month, the Anna Banana Milk Fund and FamilyWorks will provide all the milk individuals and families will need. Anna would have loved knowing that she and I could contribute to a world where fewer kids and families went without milk and the strong bones and healthy smiles that come along with it.

FamilyWorks food bank is right across the street from the shop Anna helped me open. Approximately 350 families and individuals utilize the FamilyWorks food bank each week and I couldn’t envision a more meaningful way to honor Anna’s memory than to create a fund that will provide those in need with our favorite beverage. My goal is to secure enough monthly donors so that milk will consistently flow freely to all FamilyWorks patrons for as long as they need support from the food bank. I have arranged for my milk man, John, from Smith Brothers Farms, to deliver fresh milk weekly and the deliveries can start just as soon as monthly donors start signing up. You heard that right... your very own Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream has been named as a finalist in the King County Executive’s Small Business of the Year category of the first annual Executive’s Small Business Awards Program!

To celebrate the importance and the accomplishments of small businesses throughout King County, Executive Dow Constantine is hosting the first annual King County Executive's Small Business Awards Program on Oct. 12, 2011. Awards will be presented in seven categories recognizing the performance of small businesses in King County.

Molly Moon’s is built on the foundation of community, and we are truly honored by this recognition. We are really proud of the work we’ve done this year by creating jobs, participating in our local, sustainable economy, and championing social justice for our employees and the neighborhoods our shops are nestled in. It feels great to be able to achieve all of this while having fun and serving Seattle’s favorite dessert!

Did you know that in the first quarter of 2010, the Washington State Employment Security Department reported King County had 79,022 firms of which 75,646 had 50 or fewer employees? The challenges to running a small business are infinite and often daunting, but the collective contributions of small businesses are vital to the county's economy. On behalf of all small businesses throughout the county, this special award will be given to the small business that best exemplifies the tenacity, perspicacity, and audacity it takes to successfully operate a small business.

MOLLY MOON'S SUPPORTS "BE HERE GET THERE!" CAMPAIGN

Earlier this week, Mayor Mike McGinn announced the launch of the Be Here Get There, a research-driven, incentive-based campaign designed to raise awareness and improve academic achievement by improving citywide school attendance.

We were so excited by this initiative we decided to entice students with a few delicious prizes! First of all, we've provided Seattle Public Schools with 500, yes 500 complementary scoop coupons to be distributed to students who maintain awesome attendance. Additionally (this is a big one), we will cater, via our big, blue ice cream truck, a school-wide ice cream party for the elementary, middle, high and K-8 schools who have the best average attendance this school year! How awesome is that?

Be Here Get There is a joint initiative of the City of Seattle, Seattle Public Schools, the Alliance for Education, and Get Schooled to raise awareness of the importance of going to school using community-wide education and incentives. The campaign will address the chronic absenteeism currently affecting public schools across Seattle and help improve academic achievement, boost overall student success and cultivate a lifelong passion for learning.

The Be Here Get There campaign aims to make schools engaging and attractive to students by rewarding positive behavior. To help the campaign reach students, Get Schooled is starting wake-up calls. These calls will feature a friendly message about school attendance from celebrities like NBA Player Jamal Crawford and hip hop artist Wiz Khalifa.

The campaign will also make use of healthy competitions at the school and classroom level to get students energized to go to school. Ben & Jerry's made ice cream headlines last week with their "Saturday Night Live"-inspired Schweddy Balls flavor! This limited-batch flavor by the ice cream guru's sounds delicious (Fair Trade vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum, and loaded with fudge covered rum and milk chocolate malt balls), but the name is a little off-putting. Molly Moon Neitzel today announced the opening date of her fifth Seattle-based scoop shop, located at 321 W. Galer St in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. Molly Moon’s Queen Anne, the neighborhood’s soon-to-be most popular hangout is slated to open at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Queen Anne residents proved to be Seattle’s most-devoted ice cream eaters this past winter by paying multiple visits to Moon’s big, blue ice cream truck and posting their appreciation for Moon’s creamy, frozen deliciousness on the company’s Facebook page. In celebration of Moon’s long-awaited Queen Anne opening, kids 12 years of age and under, who visit the shop on Thursday, Sept. 15 between 3 and 5 p.m. will receive a complementary kid-sized scoop of their favorite flavor. Molly Moon’s Queen Anne will be open daily from 12-noon to 11 p.m. beginning Friday, Sept. 16.

I am looking for a hard working individual who can be dedicated to helping my company succeed and helping me use my time and role more efficiently. This person will need to be on-call much of the time, mostly during Monday through Friday business hours, but there may be very occasional weekend and evening duties. We Had a Ball at Breakfast!

On February 5th, we got into the spirit of International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day by hosting breakfast at both our Wallingford and Capitol Hill shops. We had an awesome time serving up hot bowls of oatmeal and homemade waffles with scoops of ice cream on top. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it great!

Special thanks to two young Molly Moon's fans who started off their birthdays at our breakfast! Happy birthday, Sam (shown below getting a birthday serenade from a group of runners who ended their morning run at our Capitol Hill shop), and Charlie (who celebrated his big day with a scoop of Theo Chocolate on top of a waffle at our Wallingford location)!

Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream is looking for a smart, hard-working, self-motivated, friendly person to join the ice cream making team. This job beats the pants off other jobs! Ice Cream Makers at Molly Moon’s work flexible hours, participate in new flavor creation, and don’t need to know how to make ice cream to start. Molly Moon’s is an independent ice cream company creating and serving locavore ice cream and sorbets using organic and natural ingredients grown in the Pacific Northwest whenever possible. On an average day, our ice cream makers are working to their own music while churning out large batches of ice cream and working as part of a team to come up with new flavors and sundaes. MM’s serves kids, friends & families in Wallingford and Capitol Hill’s Pike/Pine corridor.

Ice Cream Maker Responsibilities

Produce between 60 and 100 gallons of fresh ice cream and/ or sorbet each day
Label, pack, and store 100 to 200 pints of ice cream each day
Prepare ingredients for each flavor and topping, including homemade salted caramel, chocolate base, balsamic reduction, hot fudge, lemon curd, fruit compotes, homemade marshmallows, etc.
Continually inventory ice cream, sorbet, and pint stock in order to produce what’s needed each day
Communicate relevant information to scoopers in an effective and friendly manner
Follow health, safety and sanitation guidelines with care
Keep kitchen and freezer areas inviting, clean, and organized
Wash dishes & utensils throughout your shift
Bring music to work to contribute to the shop’s fun environment
Contribute to Molly Moon’s goals for increasing sales and creating loyal customers (i.e. ice cream addicts!)

Ice Cream Maker Qualifications

Passion for food, cooking, and quality
Ability to stand eight hours and lift up to 50 pounds
Willingness to learn and follow instructions with precision as well as give great attention to detail
Ability to properly multitask without compromising quality
Demonstrated self motivation while also being a dedicated team player
Great communication skills and a professional, friendly attitude
Ability to text and/or check email on a daily basis
Good grades and/or volunteer work or community involvement experience a huge plus

Ice Cream Maker Compensation

HELP US HELP HAITI

On January 12th, 2010, the Caribbean nation of Haiti was devastated by a powerful earthquake. The quake left the country's capital city, Port-au-Prince, in ruins, and killed over a quarter of a million people. While the tremors lasted only half a minute, the sorrow, violence, and disease that erupted in their wake continue to plague the country.

Providing aid and relief to the people of Haiti is a cause that Molly Moon's is passionate about.

Last year, shortly after the earthquake struck, we donated an entire day's worth of sales - nearly $4,000 - to Partners in Health, a non-profit organization providing innovative health care in Haiti.

This year we plan to do the same.

Wednesday, January 12th - the one year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti - we will donate 100% of our sales to Partners in Health. Come visit us at one of our shops with your friends and families to help us help Haiti.

Partners in Health was founded in Boston circa 1987 to assist existing health care efforts being carried out in Haiti's Central Plateau. Since then, the non-profit has expanded its services to other regions of Haiti, as well as to other countries around the globe. For the past year, Partners in Health has been working tirelessly to provide those affected by the earthquake and the recent cholera epidemic with the care that they need.

Through their work in these places, Partners in Health hopes to achieve three compassionate goals: "to care for [their] patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in [those patients'] communities, and to share lessons learned around the world."

I am so excited that cookie presale is upon us for 2011, and have high hopes that each of you will reach your cookie sales goals this year! As many of you know, I was a Girl Scout, a dedicated cookie salesgirl, and attended Alice Pittenger Girl Scout Camp for 11 years! I encourage all of you to use whatever Cookie Dough you earn this year to help you get to a Girl Scout camp near you and make the most of the character building experiences and fun that can only be had at camp!

In spite of my best wishes for your cookie sales success, Molly Moon's Ice Cream got a little over-enthusiastic in our cookie purchases last year (We spent over $20,000 on Thin Mints!) and we need to take a year off from purchasing in order to use up those Mints!

We will likely be back to buying cookies in 2012, but for this year, you all are going to have to hit the pavement a little harder without me. I hate telling any scout no, and I wish you all the best!

Meyer Lemons Are Almost Here!

Winter's Meyer lemon harvest is almost underway, and we couldn't be more excited! These super sweet cousins of the common lemon are one of our favorite things to mix into our ice creams, sorbets, and toppings.

We get ours from Lemon Ladies Orchard in Emerald Hills, CA. The orchard is made up of forty trees, each one named for a lady who has inspired owner Karen Morss, and nurtured with "organic citrus fertilizer, plenty of sunshine, water, and love."

While our lemons ripen on the branch down in California, we're busy coming up with ideas for how to use them. Meyers' fresh citrusy flavor is strong enough to stand on its own, and pairs perfectly with other ingredients as well. In the past, we've used them to create some truly delicious treats, such as Meyer Lemon Sorbet, Rosemary Meyer Lemon Ice Cream, and Meyer lemon glaze.

We are hoping Meyer lemons will be returning to our menu at the end of this month, but check out this cute video from the orchard, below. Then, stop by one of our shops or our truck - parked all January long at 2231 Queen Anne Avenue North - and give them a try!

SEATTLE, Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 – Molly Moon Neitzel today announced she plans to expand her Seattle ice cream empire with the addition of a third shop in the summer of 2011. Unsure of what Seattle neighborhood to call home, Neitzel will be parking Leo, the Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Truck, in three locations over the next three months to see where the most ice cream-lovin’ Seattleites reside.

Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 1 Leo will be parked in Madrona at 1435 34th Ave. from 5 to 10 p.m. Kids who visit Leo tomorrow between 6 and 8 p.m. will receive a free kid-sized scoop. Leo will be parked in the same location throughout the month of December and will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10 p.m. and Friday’s through Sundays from noon to 10 p.m.

Following Leo’s December stint in Madrona, Seattle’s favorite ice cream truck will move to Queen Anne in January and will spend all of February in Ballard. Stay tuned for updates on Leo’s Queen Anne and Ballard whereabouts.

Molly Moon's 101

Let's face it: summer is over. It's that other gorgeous time of the year here in the Pacific Northwest when we get cozy and dawn our softest sweaters. But with the end of summer comes digging back into schoolbooks and I've been thinking about teaching a few Molly Moon's-themed lessons to all who are willing to indulge me. I've titled the class Molly Moon's 101 and hope you will find the information not only helpful, but delicious!

Lesson #1: We encourage you to taste our flavors before making your final selection! We know how hard it is to decide between Scout Mint and Vivace Coffee, especially if you've never experienced their creamy goodness before. So taste away!

Lesson #2: You don't have to stand in line when stopping by our shops to purchase a pint or two. Whether you're there with friends, family or complete strangers, standing in line at Molly Moon's is part of the experience. You are there because you love ice cream and often you will find yourself chatting with those around you about why Salted Caramel is your favorite flavor. You've created a community and we love it! We understand, though, that sometimes you only have a few minutes of your time to share with us. If it's one of those days; simply pop in the shop, head to the freezer, pick up your pint and head straight to the front of the line. This position is a 30 to 40 hour per week position at Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream. Each Truck Driver is responsible for the overall look, feel, and quality of the customer experience at the MM’s Truck and is expected to work 4 to 5 shifts per week as a driver/scooper including one Friday, Saturday or Sunday night shift. Truck Drivers report to the Operations Manager. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the items below:

Driving & Logistical Responsibilities

• Each shift will include picking up the truck at the beginning of the day or parking and locking it for the night. Night spot will likely be on Capitol Hill.

• Each shift will likely include filling the truck with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Georgetown. This task will be figured into your route for the day.

• At the beginning of each shift, stock the truck for the day with ice cream tubs, toppings, and ice cream sandwiches

• Drive truck along predetermined routes and through assigned neighborhoods to arrive at scheduled destinations promptly. Stop for customers as needed.

• Drive the truck to scheduled events in the evenings.

• Obey all traffic laws and any additional Molly Moon’s driving safety procedures

• Greet every customer before they make their order

SEATTLE, Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 – Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream is seeking Thin Mint cookies from Western Washington’s Girl Scouts for its signature “Scout Mint” ice cream. Girl Scouts of Western Washington are currently taking cookie orders from their families and friends and Molly Moon is encouraging them to stop by her Wallingford and Capitol Hill shops and sell her a box or two.

In order for Moon to keep both of her shops stocked with Scout Mint throughout 2010, she will need at least 4,500 boxes of the thin, minty, chocolate-covered wafers that make this ice cream flavor so popular.

In 2009, Moon purchased more than $18,000 in Girl Scout cookies from individual scouts and helped to send more than 30 girls to Girl Scout camp with “camperships” – scholarships earned by campers that assist in sending them to camp. This year, scouts will need to sell at least 800 boxes of cookies to receive a campership and Molly Moon’s aims to help send several girls to camp. Moon, a former Girl Scout, attended camp for 11 years and values her time at camp as some of her most empowering life experiences.

In order for Molly Moon to keep both of her shops stocked through out 2009 with Scout Mint, she will need at least 4,000 boxes of the thin, minty, chocolate-covered wafers that make this ice cream flavor so popular. All local scouts are encouraged to stop by Molly Moon's Wallingford shop and sell her a box or two.

hi seattle snow bunnies! just wanted to let you all know that we are open and cranking out the hot fudge and winter flavors!

our seasonal flavors right now are eggnog ice cream, cinnamon ice cream, candy cane ice cream, pumpkin clove ice cream, spiced cider sorbet, and black raspberry tea sorbet.

we've had lots of sledders and snow day kids in here, but i've gotten a lot of questions about whether we're open during the snow, so i just wanted to let you all know that we are OPEN -- noon to eleven, every day of the week.

i think this whole seattle snow business is a bit silly, myself, with all the fuss people make -- but still loads of fun! growing up in idaho, and learning the ice cream trade in montana, i'm used to the cold stuff. at the big dipper in montana, where i learned to make ice cream, charlie stays open through blizzards and crazy cold. people line up outside in their puffy jackets and hats and mittens to get his ice cream. we've got far more space inside, so you seattlites don't have to do that. so come on in! the fudge is hot!

ice cream pies for the holidays!

hi everyone! i hope you all are having a cozy fall. i wanted to let everyone know that we're making some delicious holiday pies now to make your family gatherings more tasty, fun and easy! just grab a pie from the pint freezer or order one in advance by calling the shop at 206.547.5105.

right now we have pumpkin ice cream pies, with pumpkin clove ice cream swirled into a graham cracker crust. and on december 6th, we'll release our peppermint fudge pies! candy cane ice cream heaped into a chocolate graham crust, drizzled over the top with our hot fudge!

the pies are $15. i hope they make your holidays bright!

this morning we did a little test run of breakfast at molly moon's and it was SO fun!

from 9 to noon we served up steaming bowls of locally grown oats, each with a scoop or two of ice cream on top and a really lovely bar of organic and local toppings. we had dried sour cherries, lots of fresh berries, candied ginger, chopped hazelnuts & walnuts, chocolate bits, and then spices: cinnamon, clove, cardamom & nutmeg. paired with vivace coffee with cream and sugar it was a perfect fall sunday morning meal!

i had maple walnut on my oatmeal with a little cinnamon and some berries. i heard people really liking cardamom with vanilla, and a lot of the kids w

ent for strawberry ice cream with berries & chocolate.

the vibe of the morning was really nice -- relaxed, good music, and room for everyone to sit & enjoy. lots of friends & nieghbors.

so the test-run was a total success,

and i really like the addition to our molly moon's community, so we'll be doing breakfast every sunday from now on. we'll keep the oatmeal hot and the toppings out until around 2 and start things up at 9 am.

i can't wait to see more of you on sunday mornings!

i have gotten various questions over the last few months about which of my ingredients are organic, which are local, and how i choose everything. so i thought i'd write a bit about that and try to answer some questions.

my priorities are local, then organic, and always delicious. this means that i'd rather choose something locally grown or made if it's delicious and naturally produced over something that is organic and grown or made in a land far, far away. and taste and quality of my ingredients are always so, so important. otherwise, our ice cream wouldn't be as good as it is!

so when it comes to local ingredients, i've found a lot of great ones and am always open to suggestions if my customers know of a great farm or producers locally that i don't know of yet. my main ingredient, of course, is dairy. i get my milk and sugar homogenized together for me by the wonderful folks at Snoqualmie Gourmet. Barry and Shanaz are an amazing couple who get all of their milk from an organic dairy farm in Lynden, WA. ***update: Barry has switched to a dairy farm in Duvall where the cows are raised lovingly and humanely and are not treated with rbst, but the farm is not registered organic*** Barry runs an incredible operation in Maltby. They built an environmentally sustainable ice cream production plant out there where they recover all the heat from their machines to heat their water and do a lot of incredible things to make their business as green as it can be. that's where i get the dairy and most of the sugar for my ice creams. they pasteurize it and homogenize it for me and package with a tiny amount (way less than 1%) of tree gums and seaweed extract. it is important to me to support barry and i love his product. UPDATE: Barry used to use corny syrup in the dairy mix he makes for me, but after long talks and a good reputation as a big customer for him, he has eliminated it for me. we are now 100% corn free!

other local ingredients include berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries), which i get from a few different farmers in western Washington -- some are organic and some are not.

my lavender is organic and comes from the lovely people at Lavender Haze in Sequim, WA. the hazelnuts we've been using in Baracky Road come from Holmquist Hazelnuts in Lynden. the walnuts i use are also grown in Washington. additional sugar (which i only use in the Salted Caramel, the sorbets, and in the toppings) comes from the sugar beet plant that i grew up near in Idaho. it's the closest place i've found to get sugar from.

my honey (used for Honey Lavender and a few sorbets) comes from Tahuya River Apiaries. the family who keeps bees for this little business is amazing. they've been working hard to keep their bees healthy through the bee crisis in western Washington. their bees live in the foothills of the Olympic mountains and i buy a 5 gallon bucket of their honey at the Ballard farmer's market every six weeks or so. their honey is the best i've ever tasted. sorbets are also a great place to use local farmers' crops. we're just finishing up our run of peach sorbet and cantaloupe mint sorbet. the cantaloupe was grown in eastern Washington and the peaches and mint were grown in western Washington. if you haven't tried those flavors, come in and get them! they'll only be around for another week or two. then we're moving on to washington apples in a spiced cider sorbet and later a local cranberry sorbet.

our coffee is, of course, Vivace Coffee. there are so many roasters to choose from in Seattle, but i am a coffee snob and will probably only ever use Vivace in my retail coffee ice cream. i worked hard to create this flavor to have all of the smoothness of a Vivace cappucino and none of the bitterness that most over-brewed coffee ice cream flavors have.

whenever i use citrus (like lemons, limes or mandarins) i buy organic citrus or citrus juices grown in California. most recently from this farm: www.lemonladies.com

then there are flavors that need a little more than western Washington can provide, like vanilla and chocolate. i get my organic vanilla extract and beans from Cook's in California (but the vanilla is not grown in the U.S.) and my chocolate is from a wonderful Seattle company, Theo Chocolate, which is the only fair trade bean-to-bar organic chocolate in the U.S.

there are other flavors that need a little extra punch from an extract or a syrup. i am constantly working on ways to eliminate the need for them, but when i do use an extract, i get organic ones from Cook's in California or a company called EAWeber in Wheeling, IL.

as for other things in the shop, the organic sugar and cake cones are all from a company called Edward & Sons in California, and the waffle cone batter is from a local company, but we are going to work on our own recipe for a gluten-free version this winter. the organic sprinkles are from EAWeber as well. the salt i buy at Whole Foods. the bergamot infused olive oil is now from California as well.

well, i hope that this post can answer a lot of people's questions about our ingredient choices. this is a constant work in progress and i'd love suggestions people have for getting more responsible ingredients.

p.s. our shirts are from alternative apparel, mostly made from organic cotton and recycled polyester fibers -- they have a great social responsibility and environmental mission! and everything in our shop is compostable, if you didn't know already!

Baracky Road Debuts Tomorrow with Celebrity Scoopers!

this has been the most labor-intensive, expensive, confusing flavor we have ever made, but it's gonna be worth it!

tomorrow we will debut Baracky Road ice cream with celebrity scoopers: Congressman Jim McDermott, Dave Hernandez of the Shins, King County Councilmember Dow Constantine, and John Roderick of the Long Winters. (and i just found out that it's John's 40th birthday! thanks for spending it with us John!) the celebrity scoopers will be behind the dipping cabinet from 1 to 3 p.m. tomorrow (saturday).

the ice cream is my special chocolate ice cream recipe that we always have in the shop, chock full of chunks of chocolate, Washington hazelnuts, and Dana Cree's homemade marshmallows. delicious!

the proceeds from the debut day of the flavor will be going to Democrats Work, an organization i care a lot about, and we'll have a place for individuals to donate to the Obama campaign as well.

summer flavors and responsible business

it isn't that i don't love keeping my friends, family and customers up on all things ice cream. it isn't that i'm hiding our upcoming flavors from your curious minds. it isn't that i've fallen into a black hole of milk, sugar and organic cherries (well, actually, that sounds close). it's just that i've been so crazy, insane, out of control busy!

i want to thank everyone who comes to the ice cream shop for coming. and eating. and tasting. and eating some more. thank you for keeping me so busy! i haven't had much time to update the blog. i said i'd be good about it and i haven't been. so here is a little update and a tiny promise that i'll try harder...

lots of things are happening at molly moon's. we've been open almost 3 months now and are really feeling like we're getting things down! we've got 15 people on staff. 15! we've got 3 ice cream makers, churning out our deliciousness nonstop. we've got plans a-spinning for more molly moon's coming to a neighborhood near you! we've got some awesome new, summer flavors. AND -- we've even got all of our employees hooked up with great health insurance!

as for the flavors, we've rolled out raspberry already and it's killing! it's slightly tangy -- like that perfect raspberry that's been sitting in the sun getting ripe for just the right amount of time. creamsicle is still around and selling fast and furious. but the thing i'm absolutely, jump-up-and-down excited for is the release of cherry ice cream! a couple weekends ago, a cute little lady named abigail came into the shop on a sunday night and told me and dana that she was a farmer out on vashon and was about to harvest a ton of organic cherries and did we want any. well yes! we did! later that week she brought us 5 bushels (100 pounds) of cherries. they were perfect and beautiful. i spent the rest of the week pitting each cherry by hand (with lots of help from friends -- thanks for the margarita popsicles caroline!). so very soon, ya'll should have some ridiculously tasty cherry ice cream in your bellies! i think i'll do some that's just plain cherry and some with some local chocolate chunks in it. i can't wait to see if people love it!

the other most exciting thing of the month is that we now have molly moon's health insurance. anyone who works at molly moon's more than 25 hours/week gets it. it's great, covers prescriptions and naturopathy and having babies and broken arms and massage therapy and everything else one needs health insurance for. this is all good, and i'm so happy to offer this to my employees, but i found myself getting angry today as i was looking at the first bill. not because it was too high, but because i found myself thinking WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE DO THIS? it is absolutely stupid what a small cost to my business this health plan is. i am paying $217 per person per month. this is a small, small price to pay in comparison to my other costs of doing business. it baffles me, and yes -- makes me slightly angry, that more businesses that are doing at all well don't insure their employees. i see it as my responsibility if i am at all profitable, until the government can figure out a better system. my employees are the lifeblood of molly moon's and are working hard for me. they deserve, as anyone does, to be healthy. i never realized, before owning a business, what a small percent of my costs health insurance would be. i guess i'm just shocked that it is not the norm to insure your most valuable business asset.

Celebrate the Last Day of School with Molly Moon's!

After a fantastic first month, we are ready for summer here at Molly Moon's! Aren't you? To celebrate the last day of school for Seattle students, we are proud to introduce Creamsicle, one of our summer flavors, next Tuesday, June 17.

And we're importing a beach, to get us all in the summer spirit! We are creating a sandy beach out in front of the shop, complete with a kiddie pool and tons of sand for kids of all ages to enjoy! For ya'll who prefer to take your party home, we'll be offering a "last Day of School Special" -- a quart of ice cream and a box of a dozen organic cones for $12! The special will last until 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

ok people. start those taste buds watering! it's countdown time! in just 24 days, we are going to rock wallingford with delicious ice cream, tangy sorbets, tasty dry sodas, and a new favorite place to hang out with the family, head for a date, or just drop into for a treat!

the party is lining up nicely. some of my friends from my music career will be there DJing the perfect soundtrack for sweetness. i even saw Wallingford's resident rock star at Fuel Coffee the other day with his adorable baby and he said they're down to party with the neighborhood on May 10th! so come on over and let me hand you a scoop!

i invite all kids to join me in cutting the ribbon on the store just after 3 pm -- and then all cones are free for kids until 5!

in other good news, i think i've perfected my honey recipe for Seattle Metropolitan this summer -- honey orange sorbet with a twist! look for it in SM in July. and we just heard that Seattle Magazine is doing a piece on ice cream in July (it's national ice cream month after all!) and Molly Moon's will be in it! so we're off to a great start with press. i can't wait to see what the next few weeks bring!

storefront progress and the delicious dana cree

i had two amazing surprises today. i was running late for my meeting with seattle pastry chef dana cree when i quickly parked in front of the ice cream store to discover -- oh my gosh! there's a lot of blank space between the world and the ice cream shop! this morning the guys from dovetail (my fantastic contractors) tore down the ugly1960s cover-up job of the original clearstory windows above the storefront. it's beautiful!

the three windows let in so much light and bring a more classic look to the interior of the space, too.

but i had to run. i was late for my meeting with dana. i walked into fuel coffee to find her ordering from my fave fuel barista, noah. i was so happy to find through our meeting that dana cree is fabulous. i'd heard great things about her. she's the pastry chef at veil on queen anne. but she is SUCH a knowledgeable chef willing to share her wealth of information -- exactly what i needed!

dana will be making all of the toppings for molly moon's homemade ice cream including hot fudge, caramel, butterscotch, and seasonal fruit compotes. yum! she's also going to help me perfect the balsamic ribbon for balsamic strawberry ice cream, teach me how to take full advantage of whole vanilla beans, and help me with the creation of baracky road!
